Woody Harrelson in Defendor
The film offers an interesting perspective on how individuals are affected by the media that surrounds them. Arthur Poppington lived in a troubled childhood without any real parental figures and turned to things such as comic books and television to form his views of the world as he grew up. It's interesting how much the concept of mean world syndrome has affected Arthur. His entire life is based on comic book and TV references which makes him believe the world is much worse than it actually is.
This is how the character of Defendor is brought about. Arthur by day works on a construction site directing traffic but by night attempts to fight crime as his alter-ego Defendor. He's kind of like what Batman would be if he wasn't super rich and watched TV all day as a kid. He doesn't really have any super gadgets and doesn't even have a fancy uniform. His uniform he wears is merely a pair of black tights, a black jersey a duct-tape D, and a helmet that has a handy dandy video camera. The character itself is kind of silly but thats purposely done to show the child-like persona that Arthur has.
Woody Harrelson has done nothing but impress me over the past year. His performance in The Messenger was impeccable and he played a comical character in Zombieland quite well too. His performance in Defendor echoes these two performances into to become quite comical and sad and touching in others.
This movie isn't perfect but it's definitely worth checking out. The film drags on a bit in a few parts but the conclusion is fantastic and hits a few sweet spots.
Defendor comes out April 13th straight to DVD due to Sony Pictures being stupid and screwing things up once again. Then again, a film like this isn't very marketable to most people. Try and check it out though whether it be from Netflix or picking it up at Redbox.
My Score- 3.5/5
