She's Out of My League (2010)

Rating: 3.5/5

Alicia Eve and Jay Baruchel in She's Out of My League

She's Out of My League is a film that unfortunately uses grossout comedy as a crutch and brings about its downfall . Jay Baruchel (Tropic Thunder) stars as Kirk Kettner, a TSA security officer who finds Molly McCleish's phone played by Alice Eve (Big Nothing). After meeting her to return her phone, the two begin dating. Both Kirk and Molly's friends try to persuade them out of the relationship. Kirk's friend believing that he's not good enough for Molly and Molly's friend saying that Kirk isn't good enough for Molly. When it comes down to it, Kirk is a regular joe schmo but he's a nice guy. Whenever I see jerks with girls, it makes me sad. If I saw a guy like Jay Baruchel with a girl like Alicia Eves, it would probably make me smile.

The film is driven by the leading performances who both make the film storyline believable and sweet at moments. Baruchel has always had a charm to him from things such as Undeclared to I'm Reed Fish. Unfortunately for the supporting actors, the director has mostly settled for B-rate comedians. The only really redeeming part of the supporting cast is Molly's friend, Patty played by actress Krysten Ritter. Ritter is a fine actress from what I've seen. She doesn't work the greatest as a comedian however. She did a great job in Breaking Bad in a primarily dramatic role. As a result, she functions well in the role of Molly's friend whenever she isn't trying to be funny.

She's Out of My League is an enjoyable film that could've been much better with a better supporting cast and a screenplay that focused more on the romance. The romance story in She's Out of My League is quite enjoyable and gives hopes to regular Joe's like myself. The grossout humor in the movie isn't very funny and is frankly quite unnecessary but I guess what can you expect from the writers of Sex Drive and Hot Tub Time Machine. While regular guys may not have it going in the looks, they're good people with caring personalities.
